02 — KNOW YOUR RISK

Top coverage considerations for independent contractors

Before you compare quotes, it helps to know which exposures actually apply to your work.

ERRORS & OMISSIONS
Contractors who give advice or design guidance — interior designers, landscape architects, estimators — carry liability if a client suffers a loss from that recommendation.
BODILY INJURY & PROPERTY DAMAGE
Anyone working with power tools, heavy equipment or compressed gas — plumbers, electricians, remodelers — needs protection against on-site mishaps and third-party damage.
PRODUCT & LIQUOR LIABILITY
Contractors who serve food or alcohol at events or job sites carry exposure for illness or injury tied to what's served.
MEDICAL & DISABILITY
Most independent contractors aren't on a group health plan. Without coverage, an injury off or on the job can mean a direct hit to your income.
03 — THE FOUNDATION

General liability: the coverage every policy is built on

A general liability policy provides the base layer of protection, then extends into a few specific components.

Bodily Injury

Covers medical care and legal defense if you or an employee causes injury or death to a third party during the course of work.

Property Damage

Covers damage you or an employee causes to property belonging to others — including the site you're working on.

Completed Operations

Covers a finished project if it later causes damage or develops an issue, and can extend to products you sell or distribute.

Advertising & Personal Injury

Covers claims of slander, libel or false advertising that damage another party's reputation.

Contract Liability

Covers you in a contract dispute. Not automatically bundled into every GL policy — worth confirming it's included.

Subcontractor Exposure

If you use subs, confirm they carry their own liability coverage — your policy may not extend to their work.

04 — BUNDLING

Do you need a Business Owners Policy?

A BOP bundles your general liability with the coverages that matter most to a small contracting business — usually at a lower combined cost than buying each separately.

Typically fits a business with up to 100 employees and about $5M or less in annual revenue.
  • PROPERTYCovers owned or rented buildings, storage, warehouses and workshops (not commercial vehicles).
  • BUS. INCOMEReplaces lost income and covers operating expenses if a covered loss interrupts your business — usually up to 12 months.
  • COMM. AUTOInsures trucks, vans and specialty vehicles used for business, separate from your GL policy.
05 — BEYOND GENERAL LIABILITY

Professional liability coverage

Professional Liability (E&O)

Errors & omissions coverage protects you if a mistake in your advice or work causes a client a financial loss — separate from bodily injury or property damage.

  • Worth carrying if you provide advice, specs or design recommendations
  • Important if you employ subs who advise clients directly
  • Some states or contracts require it outright
